- Margaret Barnard Playgroup What Referendum? What choice? Overwhelming response of local electorate: "this has nothing to offer or to do with us". Rather than vote either way to approve the bourgeoisie's promoting of further division and splitting Britain into bureaucratic fiefdoms, people mostly abstained and chose not to vote at all on March 3, 2011. The aspirations of most ordinary and working people for a society to better serve their class interests of improving public services in a planned way, fully integrating and not hiving off the local NHS from being National across all of Britain, to stop the privatisations that only serve the rich, & to renationalise sold-off and largely now failing services so as to serve the majority, and for a no-war government were all regarded as not being compatible with the electoral sham of extending the Bureaucacy. The dominant theme that echoed across all districts was Don't Vote At All, because there is not allowed a Third Option that would Reverse the powers already given. This disallowed option exposed an anti-democratic character to the charade and was discussed on BBC's Question Time. The British capitalist ruling class, its local bureaucrat cliques and the narrow nationalists (some of which actually pretend to be "left wing") will not see their tricks of divide and rule succeed in the long term, for now they have been given some "rope from which to hang themselves" as a result of this so-called referendum which has produced for them the anticipated "yes" vote from a small section of the electorate. Working people across all Britain hate the anti-people, Tory-led Government and its neverending class-based attacks on people's welfare, but splitting off the counties which constitute Wales and empowering the local bureaucrats at all levels to throw some crumbs to the masses in terms of "cheaper this and cheaper that" and "it's better here than across the 'border'", is superficial, groundless in the face of the general picture of widespread cutbacks and impoverishment, and does not make up the shortfall for which they could have made a difference about years ago if they had wanted, without this fuss. Working and progressive people will have to struggle together as one across all of Britain to regain class political strength and solidarity against their trans-national oppressors who really don't give a hoot for respecting "borders" in any case. It is understandable that for some in Scotland they see an opportunity to escape the Tory rule through "independence" - but people in England and Wales can't some with you - and they don't intend to be left with the adrenolin-seeking gang of millionaires in Parliament, that lie and exploit, for a day longer than is necessary! "Divide to rule" does not help anyone except the capitalist ruling class which ultimately acts as one internationally across all countries. Simple committee meetings constitutionally have to have a quorum in order to proceed, but such basic rules did not apply to this referendum - so what suits? Consequently, the result should be declared null and void because the question asked was subjective and failed to provide real choice, and because too few people voted. As a direct result of these farcical shenanigans there have been calls for a campaign to transfer the county of Monmouth from Wales to England with inevitable sentiment behind it, and other areas may follow suit - a case could be made: would South Merioneth be better off under the administrative jurisdiction of the West Midlands? Paying increased Tax to Gwynedd Council for more and more reduced services is a bad situation for most people (including Council employees), and voting for increased regional powers will not significantly improve things for the local population one jot, however fuller integration, not less, with the rest of the country (Britain) with demands for better and equal treatment throughout Britain must be the best move forward - although the bureaucrats and local/regional petit bourgeouis power cliques are most unlikely to approve, being best relegated accordingly to the history scrapbook. If they can keep on getting away with it in "Wales" they will try elsewhere! |
